Tutorial participation + attendance -10%
Tutorial presentation - 30% (15% written part of a designated tutorial question, 15% oral presentation)
Term project - 30%
Final exam - 30%

A highly qualitative module, with majority of the topics covered not involving any Mathematics. However, there was one question in the finals where straight-forward calculation was needed for voyage cost and time charter. Speaking of that, students will expect a handful of readings for this module, especially if you are taking it with Prof Tongzon.

EC3385 is alternating with Port Economics and is only offered once per academic year if it's available.

Tutorial classes are conducted in a manner where every student will need to present on a given topic for each week. Depending on the size of the class, there might be more than one student presenting a similar topic as a group. So, it is up to the students to coordinate with each other during the presentation, although it will be graded individually. Prior to the presentation, you need to prepare a written essay of the question that constitutes 15% out of the total 30%.

Up to the lecturer's consent and student's interest, you may or not choose to write the same topic from your tutorial presentation for your term project, which is a more complete term paper.

Final exam is of short answer questions, where you can choose 4 out of 5 questions given.

Be prepare to expect a high workload for this module because Prof Tongzon is a very knowledgeable lecturer in maritime economics field, and has high expectations on his students' arguments for any form of doubts that he would have on their presentations.

You might find Prof Tongzon's lectures to be long-winded at times because he tends to share more of his experiences in the field during the lectures and is unable to finish the syllabus in time. However, Prof Tongzon is lenient in terms of accepting his students opinions on the conduct of the course, and you are able to receive good answers from him on any questions in Maritime and Shipping economics.

Course Difficulty: 3/5
